You are invited to a talk followed by discussion on the Closure of mines in Goa. Labour MP John McDonnell who tabled the Early day motion 522 with cross party support of 8 MPs will host and Chair the event. Carmen Miranda, Chair of SGCUK (Save Goa Campaign UK) will make a brief presentation and update on latest developments.

"That this House congratulates Indian judge, Justice M. B. Shah, for his inquiry exposing the illegal mining in Goa which he estimates has cost the Goan community 3.75 billion over the last five years, plundering the natural resources and environment of Goa in an unregulated and often illegal trade of iron ore to China and other countries at the expense of the environment, health and livelihoods of Goan farmers; welcomes the decisive action of the Indian and Goan authorities in closing the mines, allowing only those mines with proper documentation to resume operations in due course; urges that all those workers who have lost their incomes as a result of the closures be compensated for their loss of wages and that the Indian central government and Goan state government work with Goan community organisations, environmental non-governmental organisations and representatives of the local farmers, mine workers and lorry drivers to develop a plan for the development of a long-term sustainable economy in Goa that is not dependent on mining and the destruction of the environment"

20.06.2012. YLGS have signed Tourism Concern's petition Demanding an End to Water Injustice in Goa - have you?

Young London Goan Society (YLGS) - Tourism Concern - Zero Tolerance for Water Injustice in Goa

YLGS supports Tourism Concern's Zero Tolerance for Water Injustice in Goa

The YLGS are supporting a campaign that Tourism Concern is mounting in partnership with Goan NGO, Eco Footprints - Zero Tolerance for Water Injustice in Goa. In Goa, Eco Footprints is working with affected communities in a bid to foster constructive engagement with relevant government and tourism industry stakeholders, so that this issue can be meaningfully and sustainably resolved. Eco Footprints aim to create a platform on which community members can engage in a dialogue with other relevant parties around more equitable and sustainable water management options. Tourism Concern, a UK-based charity working to promote ethical and sustainable tourism, will also be pushing for UK outbound tour operators and international hotel groups to engage in this process.

Research commissioned by Tourism Concern and undertaken by CRT (Centre for Responsible Tourism - part of the Council for Social Justice and Peace (Caritas), which is based in Panjim) has revealed how poorly regulated tourism in Goa is impacting upon water availability, accessibility and quality for many households. There is growing concern among local people about how weakly monitored consumption and irresponsible disposal of water by hotels and resorts are:

  • - Depleting groundwater and wells
  • - Polluting waterways and beaches
  • - Appropriating public supplies to the detriment of communities and livelihoods, including small-scale tourism entrepreneurs
  • - Forcing households to abandon wells and depend on limited and unreliable piped supplies
  • - Undermining the long-term sustainability of tourism development in Goa, upon which so many livelihoods depend

The full research findings are published in the report, Reclaiming Water Rights - Towards an Equitable Social Contract (2011). This was launched in Goa on 11th June by Eco Footprints and CRT.

The YLGS are supporting Tourism Concern's online petition to raise awareness and mobilise public support for action by the Government of Goa to address this pressing social and environmental issue. As I'm sure you're aware, as well as being home to a vibrant Goan diaspora community, the UK is a key source market for tourists to Goa, many of whom return year after year to enjoy Goa's beautiful coastlines and the warm hospitality of its people. We believe that people in the UK will share our dismay and concern about the current situation of water inequity and associated environmental degradation in Goa being caused by unsustainable tourism development and management.

11.11.2011. YLGS have signed the UNESCO Petition to save our beloved Goa - have you?

Young London Goan Society (YLGS) - Save Goan Campaign UK

YLGS supports the Save Goan Campaign UK

In fact, two of our members Carl Mendes & Jason Fernandes play an active part on the committee of the Save Goa Campaign.

Several members of the Goan Diaspora spotted a glaring omission in the failure of the Goa Government to seek a World Heritage status for the Western Ghats in Goa. The state of Goa has been excluded in the application for World Heritage status being forwarded to UNESCO by the Indian government. There is an urgent need to send a petition urging the Government of Goa to take immediate steps to include Goa in the UNESCO nomination dossier.

Your name, city and country will appear in the petition but not your email address. You are asked for your e-mail address to confirm your details before your name appears on the public list.

Young London Goan Society (YLGS) - Save Goa Campaign UK - Be Fearless

BE FEARLESS!!

In fact, two of our members Carl Mendes and Jason Fernandes play an active part on the Save Goa Campaign UK (SGCUK) committee of the Save Goa Campaign.

Save Goa Campaign UK (SGCUK) aims to create awareness among Goans worldwide regarding the widespread irregularities and negative impacts of the iron ore industry in Goa, many of which are irreversible. It aims to support non-governmental organizations, activists and community workers in Goa to fight and stop the disastrous and uncontrolled expansion of mining. This includes support to seek recourse in the rule of law to stop the widespread illegalities of the mining industry, and lobby the government to start phasing out mining and introduce sustainable industries that will not damage the delicate ecological balance of Goa’s environment.

Internationally the SGCUK aims to raise funds and inform public opinion regarding the mining policies destroying Goa, and encourage peaceful action and sustained lobbying of decision makers to influence positive change towards development which is sustainable.
